Description:

Adobe AIR: Cross-Platform Runtime Now Maintained by Harman

Adobe AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) runs applications built with ActionScript, Flex, HTML, and JavaScript as standalone desktop applications and as native iOS and Android apps. Adobe released the runtime in 2008 and added mobile support in 2010. In June 2019, Adobe transferred ongoing platform support and feature development for AIR to HARMAN, a long-standing Adobe partner and a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics.

Support and Maintenance

Platform development: HARMAN provides platform support and feature development for the AIR runtime and the AIR SDK, covering bug fixes, platform compatibility, and new functionality. Developers seeking support for AIR 33 and later contact HARMAN directly.

Transition timeline: Adobe scheduled security-only fixes for AIR v32 on desktop platforms, Windows 7 and later and Mac OS X, until the end of 2020. Ongoing support then moved to HARMAN.

Enterprise and embedded services: HARMAN offers enterprise support, along with bespoke and embedded versions of AIR for platforms whose distribution falls outside the SDK license agreement.

Current Release and SDK

AIR 33 is released on a commercial basis and adds support for 64-bit Android devices and the current Google Play Store requirements. The AIR SDK is provided through a dedicated AIR SDK website, where developers can download the current version.

Migration Services

HARMAN also offers consultancy and migration services for organizations moving Flash and Flex-based applications to HTML5 and JavaScript frameworks, including Angular and TypeScript-based frameworks. For applications built with Apache Flex, Apache Royale keeps an MXML and ActionScript 3 codebase while targeting a lightweight responsive framework. HARMAN additionally offers extended support for Flash Player for enterprise customers.
